Plot Overview

Set in early 20th-century East Texas, the story follows young Jack Parker (Levon Hawke) on a perilous quest to rescue his kidnapped sister, Lula (Esmรฉ Creed-Miles), from the clutches of the ruthless Cut Throat Bill (Juliette Lewis). Jack enlists the help of Reginald Jones (Peter Dinklage), a crafty bounty hunter, along with a grave-digging ex-slave and a street-smart prostitute. Peter Dinklage, who also served as a producer, had been attached to the project since 2014, describing it as a passion project. Principal photography took place in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, from March 1 to March 30, 2023. The film was released theatrically in the United States by Samuel Goldwyn Films on September 6, 2024, and made its French debut at the Deauville American Film Festival shortly thereafter.

Critical Reception

The Thicket received mixed reviews from critics. While some praised the strong performances, particularly those of Dinklage and Lewis, others felt the narrative lacked depth and character development. The film’s atmospheric setting and departure from traditional Western tropes were noted, with its snow-covered landscapes providing a stark backdrop to the grim tale.
